Format Guide

  • Use JPG for photos and broad compatibility
  • Use PNG for transparency and crisp graphics
  • Use WebP for smaller web images in modern browsers

Transparency and Quality

JPG does not support transparency. Transparent PNG files are flattened against a background when saved as JPG. WebP can keep transparency but may be less compatible with older apps.

How to Use

  1. Select an image file to convert.
  2. After the file is analyzed, choose an available output format.
  3. Adjust quality for formats such as JPG, WebP, and AVIF. The default is 100%.
  4. AVIF output, HEIC/HEIF, TIFF, and GIF frame ZIP processing load the required codec from the external CDN, then run in your browser.
  5. For multi-page TIFF files, choose PNG ZIP to save every page as a separate PNG file.
  6. For animated GIF or APNG files, choose PNG ZIP to extract all frames as individual PNG files. Still-image output saves a static image.
  7. Choose a background color for transparent images saved as JPG or BMP.
  8. ICO output creates a PNG-based ICO file containing 16, 32, 48, and 256px sizes.
  9. Check the preview, size change, and output format, then download the result.

Examples

  • Convert an HEIC photo to JPG or PNG
  • Save a multi-page TIFF as a PNG ZIP
  • Extract every animated GIF or APNG frame as a PNG ZIP
  • Convert a transparent PNG to JPG with a selected background color
  • Rasterize an SVG icon as PNG or WebP
  • Convert a PNG image to a multi-size ICO file

Which Output Format Should I Choose?

GoalSuggested format and reason
Compatibility firstJPG or PNG. Both are widely supported.
Keep transparencyPNG or WebP. JPG has no transparency.
Photo web uploadJPG or WebP. Compare lossy compression and file size.
Higher compression efficiencyAVIF. Check browser support and processing time.
Mobile photo inputHEIC/HEIF can be converted to supported output formats.

Changing format does not restore lost detail. Compare image compression when file size is the only goal.

If smaller file size is the only goal, also compare the Image Compressor.

Calculation and Conversion Notes

Image format conversion checks the file header and uses browser decoding plus a Web Worker where possible. The enabled scope covers JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, the first frame of GIF files, all GIF frames as PNG ZIP, BMP, SVG, HEIC/HEIF input, TIFF input with multi-page PNG ZIP, and PNG-based ICO conversion. Animated GIF/WebP re-encoding is not exposed until verified external CDN codecs and SHA-256 integrity data are configured.

What Conversion Cannot Fix

Changing format does not restore low resolution or damaged image detail. It mainly changes compatibility, file size, and transparency support.

FAQ

Does JPG keep transparency?

No. JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are flattened against a background.

When should I use WebP?

Use WebP when web file size matters and modern browser support is acceptable.

Can format conversion improve quality?

It cannot create detail that is not in the source. It mainly changes compatibility, size, and transparency support.
