Choosing a Quality Value

For JPG and WebP, lower quality can reduce file size but may remove detail. PNG compression behaves differently depending on whether the image is a photo, logo, icon, or screenshot.

How to Use

  3. Compare the original and compressed result side by side.
  4. Use Fit, 100%, zoom in, and zoom out to inspect the same area in both previews.

Choosing an Image Quality

These ranges are starting points for review, not guaranteed file-size or quality targets. Results vary with the image and browser encoder.

Use this tool when dimensions should stay the same. Resize first when pixel dimensions also need to be reduced.

Calculation and Conversion Notes

Image compression uses the image encoding methods supported by the browser and adjusts the quality value. JPG and WebP generally use the quality setting, while PNG quality support can be limited depending on the browser implementation. Selected images are not uploaded to a server.

How to Check the Result

Do not judge only by file size. Zoom the original and compressed previews to the same scale and position, then check text, faces, and edges. If artifacts are visible, increase the quality value.

Limits

Already-compressed images may not shrink much. If transparency is required, use PNG or WebP instead of JPG.

Why does PNG sometimes shrink very little?
