Calculation and Conversion Notes
Image to ASCII conversion works by drawing the selected image to a browser Canvas at the requested character width, then mapping each sampled pixel's relative luminance to a character in the selected character set. Luminance is calculated as 0.2126R + 0.7152G + 0.0722B, with brightness, contrast, inversion, and transparency options applied. In color mode, characters are selected by brightness and each character uses the original pixel color. Selected images are processed only in your browser and are not uploaded to a server.
FAQ
What is ASCII art?
ASCII art is a text-based picture made by arranging characters and symbols.
Is this the same as OCR?
No. It does not read text inside an image. It maps pixel brightness to characters as a visual effect.
Why does the result look stretched?
Text characters have different width and height proportions than image pixels. Use the character aspect correction option to adjust it.
Why does the copied result look broken?
The destination may not use a monospace font or may remove repeated spaces. Use PNG download when you need to preserve the look.
Can I create colored ASCII art?
Yes. The tool can apply original image colors to each character. Use PNG or HTML output to preserve color.
Can transparent PNG images be processed?
Yes. Transparent areas can be treated as spaces or composited with a selected background color.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The selected image is processed only in your browser and is not sent to a server or external API.
Why is a large output slower?
Larger output creates more characters and requires more Canvas rendering work.
What images work best?
Images with clear outlines and strong contrast between the subject and background usually work best.
Can I use Korean characters?
You can enter them in the custom character set, but different character widths and visual density may change the result.
